Setting Career Milestones
If you have big career dreams, and you know
the big picture of why you want to attain those dreams, you are going to
break down those dreams into to smaller doable goals to get there.
Remember, you can't just get there,
you have to follow a recipe, you have to follow a well charted route that
will take you to your destination... Along the route you are going to
cross several posts or milestones...
For how do you know how much of your journey you have completed and
how much is left, how do you even know when you get there? Hence knowing
your career milestones is important. At each milestone you need to know
exactly why you are doing it, and what comes next.
For instance if your career goal is to
become a medical doctor, here are some possible milestones:
-
You need to take certain courses to complete
your entrance requirements into Medical school.
-
You need to complete those courses with
certain minimum percentages to qualify for admission.
-
You need to apply to medical schools.
-
Once accepted, you need to work diligently
and consistently for the prescribed number of years to get your medical
degree.
-
Then you need to look for a residency and
complete it successfully.
-
Now that you are a qualified doctor, you
need to get a practice or join an existing practice or hospital.
-
You need to start working on your
specialization goals...
Each of the steps described above is a
career milestone. You need to know exactly when you are going to start
that milestone and when you have completed it, and it is time to move to
the next step. You need to be able to keep your big picture in view all
the time. For if you lose focus you are going to get lost along the way.
These milestones are applicable to almost every dream career you can think
of...
