The Power of Positive Expectations For Career Success

Your expectations can rock your world and your career...

I recently attended a five month long career development program at one of the top technical colleges in Vancouver, BC. It was designed for mid life career change of people who were looking to upgrade their technical skills and trying to get back into the mainstream work force.

Most of the students in this program were sponsored by Human Resource development, though a few including myself were self sponsored. About half way through the program, when we started working on our career search skills, a few of the students started tending towards negative comments and complaints...

They kept complaining that this program was a ruse and there was no chance of getting good jobs even upon acquiring all those technical skills. While others kept up there positive expectations... guess who got all the top jobs at the end?

It's a no brainer really, there have been several well documented studies conducted by professional psychologists and scientists...

At one school, the low performing kids were constantly fed positive comments by their teachers... 'You are brilliant', 'I know you will do well ', etc. While some of the high IQ kids were constantly fed low expectations comments.... Guess who did well at the end of the year... the low performers were out at the top!

Similarly parents who have high expectations for their children and constantly keep on reinforcing their beliefs, almost always have kids that turn out to be high performers and vice versa.

There are two types of expectations:

Expectations that you hold yourself about how a certain thing will turn out... For instance, a lot of people have beliefs that they will never do well in business or sales because they are not born with a 'business oriented mind'. Or because you have failed a lot in the past, so your present endeavor will also not turn out well?

The second type of expectation are those held by your well meaning parents, your family, your friends etc... and they keep on discouraging you about something because they sincerely believe that you will make a mess of it.

So even before you launch your dream career, here are some questions for you to resolve...

  • What are your expectations about your dream career... Will you succeed or not?

  • What are your family and friends expectations?

  • Whose expectations will you live by... Yours or your well meaning friends?

If you decide to go with your expectations about your dream career... better make sure they are positive, else you will never be able to reach your goals.

The way to modify your expectations is to do some little thing really well and then use this experience to reinforce the belief that you can do a bigger thing equally well... as so amply put in this quote:

"If you can do a little thing well, you can do a bigger thing well too; and remember the little thing will always precede the bigger"... William B. Storey

Another way of developing positive expectations is by building up your self confidence and self esteem to the ultimate peak where no challenge remains so big enough that you cannot do it. You can do it. Click Here Now
